    What is Aromatherapy?

Today the term ‘Aromatherapy’ is used to promote everything from air fresheners to bath oils and shampoos. Aromatherapy is the use of therapeutic grade essential oils to influence conditions affecting the body, mind and spirit. It is a natural approach to healing and an alternative to the current emphasis on drugs. Essential oils occur naturally in nature in a number of aromatic plants: if you rub the leaves of a rosemary bush between your fingers, what you will smell is the essential oil of rosemary. Essential oils can occur in different parts of the plant. They are found in the leaves, flowers, seeds, roots and wood. Rosemary essential oil is found in the flowering tops and leaves of the rosemary bush while essential oil of lemon is contained in the rind of the fruit. The liquid that squirts out of the skin of a lemon, orange or grapefruit when squeezed is in fact essential oil. Essential oils that are raw, pure and unaltered contain the same plant constituents as are found in nature. Aromatherapy is the use of essential oils for therapeutic purposes. However, not all essential oils have therapeutic purposes. Some essential oils, even though they may be expensive, are not therapeutic and may not be effective in healing. The secret to obtaining therapeutic quality essential oils is to locate a reliable source. Your essential oil provider should be able to supply you with information about the essential oils you are buying, tracing the life of the oil from seed to bottle.
